Spotted raiders...?

Nesting box with entrance enlarged by woodpecker

Posted: Sunday 6 July, 2014

Some of you may have noticed that we have a number of nesting boxes around the Wood.  Some of these are for bats, the rest for blue tits and the like.

The other day, we found one of these bird boxes with the entrance hole significantly enlarged (see photo).  This is likely to be the work of a woodpecker.  There have been a number of sightings of the spotted woodpecker in Laide Wood in recent weeks.  The bird box was probably occupied at the time, and the raiding woodpecker likely helped itself - SpringWatch style - to the chicks inside.
